Infertility Q & A

What is infertility?

Infertility is when a couple can’t become pregnant within a year of having unprotected sex. While infertility has historically been considered a women’s health issue, both men and women experience fertility problems.

When should I talk to a doctor about infertility?

If you’re under the age of 35, you should make an appointment at Conceive Fertility Center if you’ve been trying to get pregnant for a year without success. If you’re 35 or older, you should make an appointment after six months of unprotected sex without becoming pregnant.

What causes infertility?

Several things need to happen for conception. A woman must produce and release a healthy egg, and a man needs to produce viable sperm that reaches and fertilizes the egg. Finally, the fertilized egg must implant into the wall of the uterus. Problems in any part of this process can cause infertility.

For example, women may have a condition such as polycystic ovarian syndrome that prevents the production and release of mature eggs, or something might prevent the egg from reaching the uterus. Additionally, a woman may have fibroids, polyps, or other structural abnormalities that prevent a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterine wall.

Men’s infertility typically comes down to an insufficient quantity or quality of sperm. For example, if a man doesn’t produce enough sperm, the chances of a single sperm reaching and penetrating an egg cell decrease. Additionally, if the sperm cells aren’t sufficiently mobile, they won’t be able to reach the egg.

How is infertility assessed?

Conceive Fertility Center offers comprehensive fertility assessments for men and women. Both men and women have thorough physical exams and share details about their lifestyle, sexual history, and personal and family medical history.

Men provide a semen sample, which is tested for both the quantity and quality of the sperm cells. Women have tests to assess their ovulation, ovarian reserves, and hormone levels. They may also have diagnostic imaging tests, hysteroscopy, or laparoscopy to check for structural abnormalities or conditions that prevent pregnancy.

When Conceive Fertility Center identifies the cause of your fertility problems, they recommend customized treatments to help you conceive, including:

  • Ovulation stimulation
  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI)
  • In vitro fertilization (IVF)
  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

Depending on your specific needs, your fertility specialist may recommend donor eggs, sperm, or surrogacy.
