IUI Q & A

What is intrauterine insemination (IUI)?

Intrauterine insemination (IUI), also called artificial insemination, is a simple and painless procedure in which your fertility specialist injects a concentrated sample of sperm directly into your uterus while you ovulate to increase your chances of conception. It reduces the distance a sperm needs to travel, which increases the chances of successful fertilization.

IUI is less invasive than other fertility treatments such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). It’s also usually less expensive than IVF or ICSI procedures.

When should I use IUI?

Conceive Fertility Center suggests IUI in several situations. For example, if you have a male fertility problem such as low sperm motility or concentration, IUI can make it easier for the sperm to reach your egg. You may also consider IUI if:

  • You have a small cervical opening
  • You have unusually thick cervical mucus
  • You have trouble completing intercourse

Conceive Fertility Center offers extensive fertility testing to identify the cause of your infertility and recommend treatments to help you conceive.

What is the IUI process?

During IUI, you take ovulation-stimulating medication. Conceive Fertility Center monitors your ovulation and ovaries with blood tests and ultrasounds to identify the best day to perform the IUI procedure.

When you reach your most fertile days, your partner provides a sperm sample, or you can use donor sperm. The sample is washed, which extracts the sperm and removes chemicals in semen that can trigger reactions in the uterus that get in the way of conception.

Then, while you recline on a treatment table with your feet in stirrups, your fertility specialist inserts a thin catheter through your cervix and into your uterus. Then they inject the washed sperm into your uterus.

The injection process takes 5-10 minutes and isn’t usually painful. You may have some mild cramping after the procedure, but any discomfort subsides rapidly. Then, approximately 10 days after your IUI procedure, you have a blood test to see if your IUI was successful.
